Why Maintaining Your Windows is Essential to Home Security

You never know when an accident might happen in your home. That’s why you have homeowners insurance to help you pick up the pieces when something goes wrong. However, your policy will only be able to help you after an accident occurs, and it won’t cover damage that results from normal wear & tear. It’s up to you to create a secure, safe household for yourself.a large lawn in front of a house

One often-overlooked liability is your windows. They are entryways to the home, control the flow of air, and can be escape routes in emergencies (or doors when you lock yourself out). However, if your windows are not properly taken care of, you could be exposing yourself to risk of break-ins, pests and other hazards. Some of these hazards might not have coverage from your home insurance, either.

Consider some of the liabilities associated with your windows, and what you can do to reduce these.

Your Windows and the Risks They Pose You

Your household’s windows are not just for show. They are safety features and essential parts of the structure and ventilation system. However, if they are improperly installed, broken or neglected, then they could cause a lot of headaches for you. Just a few of the ramifications of misaligned or broken windows include:

  • Drafts that lead to wasted energy and high utility bills.

  • Leakage points that allow water into the home, increase flood risks and facilitate mold growth.

  • Entryways for pests to invade the home.

  • Easy access points for thieves or other home intruders.

If a thief breaks into your home through a broken window, then your homeowners insurance will likely cover the results. However, when it comes to leaks, pests and mold, you will have no coverage because you could have reasonably prevented these problems from occurring had you maintained the windows.

Damage to windows, even minor damage, can put the entire frame, the surrounding structure and the interior of the home at risk. As a result, it’s better to do what you can to maintain your windows when times are good, rather than having to pay for cleanup after a problem occurs.

How Can I Maintain My Windows?

Generally, window maintenance is easy, simple and affordable. Often, simple vigilance will help you spot problems and take steps to repair them while they are small.

  • Do you feel a breeze or draft when the windows are closed? This is a sign that they might be misaligned and in need of repairs.

  • Test the locks. If they are missing, damaged or easy to trip, then it is time to consider replacing them. Don’t forget to always keep the windows locked, both when you are at home and away.

  • Are you noticing moisture around the windows, black mold growth, or warping or discoloration in the walls around the frame? If so, this might indicate that your windows are no longer keeping moisture out.

Overall, taking care of your windows helps you prevent problems that your homeowners insurance might not cover. Therefore, invest a little time in your windows today, so that they won’t cost you a handful later.
